Equine Photoshoot

How to prepare

Preparing for an equine photoshoot involves careful planning to ensure both the horse and you look your best. Here’s a guide, along with some outfit ideas I suggest to clients:

arab horse

• Bathe the horse the day before if needed.

• Brush the coat thoroughly to remove dirt and enhance its natural shine.

• Clean tack, such as saddles, bridles, and headcollars.

• Consider plaiting the mane and tail if it suits the aesthetic.

• If your shoot is in the Winter months, clip them a week before your shoot so they will look sleek and shiny.

Clean and Groom the Horse

• Do you have a specific ‘look’ in mind? Select a location that complements the vision you have; i,e: a long grassy field for a soft and dreamy look.

• Pick a place that speaks to your soul. Is there somewhere meaningful to you and your horse? Would you like to travel off your yard, or stay put?

• For soft, flattering light, schedule your session during golden hours (early morning or late afternoon). When the sun is high it can produce harsh lighting conditions with lots of contrast so we may have to find some shade.

• For black background sessions, choose a barn or somewhere with a large opening, a stable is not big enough.

Choose a Suitable Time & Location

Casual and Rustic?

Tops: Plaid shirts, chunky arran knit jumper, or simple neutral-toned shirts.

Bottoms: Denim jeans, leggings, or breeches.

Footwear: Riding boots, ankle boots, or clean white trainers.

Romantic and Flowing?

Dresses: Maxi dresses or skirts in soft, flowing fabrics (avoid too long to prevent tangling or tripping up).

Colors: Neutral tones, pastels, or earthy hues.

Accessories: Add a wide-brim hat, scarf, or subtle jewelry.

Glamorous and Formal?

Dresses: Elegant gowns that flow well in the breeze (bold colors like red or emerald green work beautifully).

Accessories: Statement jewelry or a coordinating shawl.

Seasonal Themes?

Spring/Summer: Light, airy fabrics in soft greens, blues, or yellows.

Autumn/Winter: Warm tones like burgundy, mustard, or forest green with cozy layers.

Riding Shots?

• If you are wanting riding images in the arena, choose your best matchy matchy, or showwear.

Tips for Outfits Around Horses

• Avoid loud patterns or overly bright colors that might distract or spook the horse.

• Opt for fabrics that won’t easily catch on tack or bushes.

• Make sure outfits are comfortable and easy to move in for natural poses.

• Coordinate with the horse’s coloring for a cohesive look (e.g., avoiding beige near a palomino or black on black).

• Bring a backup outfit in case of dirt or accidents. It’s always better to bring too much with you than not enough!

In-between Kit

  • Snacks - For you and your horse. Don’t forget the water!

  • Keep Cozy - Bring your favourite warm long coat for those in-between moments.

  • Touch Ups - A spare grooming kit for your horse, and spare make-up/hairbrush stash for you!

  • Footwear - In addition to your chosen footwear for your ‘fit’, I recommend something comfy and easily removed, such as wellies ... or Crocs.

  • And one of the most important bits…don’t go at it alone! - Grab your most hype friend or family member to help you and your horse between shots. A busket of treats being rattled is always a winner!

The most important thing, is to enjoy it and have fun!!
