Dancing in the Rain

An atmospheric shoot in Arundel.

Let me set the scene.

The sky was a dense white hiding enormous clouds just waiting to soak the folk that would be foolish enough to set foot outside. Droplets already hung from bare winter branches and the old man’s beard resembled soaked cotton wool balls hastily discarded into bushes.

For me, a hardcore outdoorsy person who doesn’t mind the rain, this was the perfcet dreamy light I was hoping for and fortunately Bethany was also up for it. We embraced the rain and used it to our advantage.

I have been documenting B’s dancing journey for years, but due to COVID putting a scupper on plans this was to be the first one since 2019, and we certainly weren’t about to let a little rain stop play. We loaded the car and I mean loaded the car, with numerous outfit choices, a couple of umbrellas and an old white plastic bag to protect my camera. It would also come in handy to create a soft milky ethereal edge to some of the images.

Four outfit changes, four different locations, beeps and smiles from locals who thought we were bonkers and an inquisitive swan, we laughed and danced our way through 3 hours. We were absolutely drenched by the end of it, but the only thing that didn’t make it to another day were B’s black pointe shoes.

Who needs an excuse to buy another pair anyway!
